Mountain (2,052 m.) of Macedonia, natural boundary of Campanian plain and the plateau of Kozani. It connects on the North with Mount Vora close to Edessa and the basin of Vegoritis lake, while the southern end on the northern bank of Aliakmonas, the deep valley of Aliakmonas separates it from the Pieria mountains.
Major peaks: Tsanaktsi (2,052 m.), Black Stone (2,027 m.), Palace (1,895 m.), Arsoumpasi (1,874 m.), Xirovouni (1,804 m.), Giona (1,749 m.) and Thorn (1,650 m.).
Sedimentary, shale and limestone in the northern half, crystalline in the south, has the form of elongated, with the northern and eastern slopes covered with forests (mainly beech and fir) and fruit trees, while western is usually naked. The abundant waters of forming small waterfalls and drive industrial facilities in Edessa and Naoussa. The snow-covered slopes are suitable for skiing and attract many skiers and fans at matches played in “Kato Vermio (Seli)” where a ski center from the “Laka Mire” (alt. 1,500 m.) at the top “Arsoumpasi”. In the North it became the first ski resort in the country. In the North rises as a natural barrier between the central and western Macedonia with few crossings as the one of Chadovas, where passes the road Thessaloniki – Veroia – Kozani strait Edessa (Agra and Boucharem Khan), where passing the carriageway and railway line Thessaloniki – Edessa – Florina, and Naoussa, where it passes by Akrini route to Kozani. For this reason, the first two crossings were fields of military operations, both during the Balkan and during the two world wars. The snow-covered slopes of Vermio are suitable for skiing and attract many skiers every year. In Vermio at an altitude of 1,200 m., at the edge of the settlement “Kastania”, is built the monastery of Sumela, founded in 1950 by refugees from Pontus and is dedicated to the Assumption. Vermion rises as a natural barrier between the central and western Macedonia.

Monastery of the Prophet Elias in Aghia Varvara at Aliakmonas (in reconstruction).
The Archangels’ Monastery of Naoussa (ruins only).
Monastery of the Holy Prodromos of Naoussa (female).
Foundation Panagia Sumela in Kastania, Imathia, a wellknown monstery.

The path Mountaki of Vermio
This path of Vermio is located in Naoussa.
One can approach the trail via the park of Saint Nicholas Naoussa.
The value of the path lies in the fact that the walker can admire a large number of rare plants of Vermio.
On the rocky slopes of the stream Selioticos grow enough Greek and Balkan endemic plants.
The more special plants in the path are the Ramonda nathaliae, Lilium chalcedonicum, Colchicum doerfleri, Stachys iva and a lot of other rare plants of unique beauty.
In the area of the path is very likely to encounter deer, wild boars, hares and other small animals of the forest.
